Technique: Soft Edges with Wet-on-Wet

Wet-on-wet is one of the easiest ways to get that soft, dreamy watercolor look. You simply add clean water first, then drop in pigment while the surface is still glossy so the color can spread naturally and create those blurred, airy edges.

  • Wet your paper evenly with clean water.
  • Drop in color while the surface still looks shiny.
  • Let the paint move on its own, and don’t overwork it.
  • Use it for skies, florals, and loose background washes.

Perfect Peel:

White Borders

crisp borders

A crisp white border gives your watercolor piece that clean, finished look, but the trick is keeping the paper intact when the tape comes off. If you want sharp edges without tears, keep it simple: use low-tack artist tape, start with fully dry paper, and peel slowly once everything is completely dry.

  • Use the right tape: Skip heavy masking tape and go with low-tack artist tape.
  • Seal the edge: Press the inner edge down firmly so paint doesn’t bleed underneath.
  • Wait it out: Don’t peel tape from damp paper.
  • Peel slow: Pull the tape back at about a 45-degree angle.
  • If it sticks: A little warm air from a hairdryer can help loosen the adhesive.

Mixing the Deep: Coastal Blues

If you want that rich, moody coastal blue, keep it simple: start with Ultramarine, soften it with a touch of Burnt Umber, and add just a tiny bit of Viridian for that ocean-teal finish. It’s an easy mix that helps your blues feel deeper, less bright, and a whole lot more collected.

  • Start with Ultramarine for your base depth.
  • Add Burnt Umber to mute the blue and keep it natural.
  • Mix in Viridian for a cool, coastal teal edge.
  • Keep your brushes clean so your color stays crisp and smooth.

Happy mixing!
